A Funeral Mass will be held for Susan Hynes at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at St. Therese Catholic Church with Father Selvaraj officiating with a graveside to follow at Fairway Garden of Memories Cemetery in Van. Visitation will be held at Hilliard Funeral Home on Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. with a Rosary to follow at 7:30 p.m.
Elizabeth Susan Reid Hynes was born July 19, 1945 in Salinas, California and lived there until moving to Fullerton, CA where she graduated from high school. She graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, MO. In Columbia, she met and married the love of her life, Bill. They spent the first 16 years of marriage in farm and ranch management in Missouri before relocating to Texas in 1982. Susan returned to school at East Texas State University in Commerce where she earned her teaching degree in 1984. They finally settled in Van, Texas in 1984, where she began her 27-year teaching career at Van ISD's J.E. Rhodes Elementary. Teaching was her passion, whether in the public school classroom or at the church. Susan was a devout member of St. Therese Catholic Church in Canton, where she served as the Director of Religious Education and taught Sunday School. She also loved to play Bridge and Canasta with her friends.
Susan passed away at the age of 73 on July 24, 2018 at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill in 2005, and parents, Robert Louis Reid and Edith Hazel Fleming Reid.
Survivors include her children, Martha Hynes Gates of Van, Joe Hynes of Van, Julie Hynes of Van and Bobby Hynes (Bethany) of Colorado; sister, Penny Jellison of Cedar Park; and seven grandchildren, Alexis, Jack, Liam, Killian, Lachlan, Kaden and Kaia.
Pallbearers will be Joe Hynes, Bobby Hynes, Jack Gates, Bobby Jellison, Tom Giovanni and Dennis Livingston.
